Making new team members feel welcome and giving them the opportunity to learn about their company and coworkers is vital for a productive and positive entrepreneurial climate. A couple of weeks after my start at AutoScout24 I attended their Welcome Day which aims to do just that. Here is an account of my experience.
Modern Companies Are Also More Complex
So, I am new at the Scout24 Group. The last couple of weeks were a little overwhelming with meeting all these different people in the elevator or on during my coffee break. The Welcome Day gave me an opportunity to get to know the company much better and to meet with other New-Scouts. In my experience, strict hierarchical structures and monodisciplinary teams work great for quickly learning who is who. Hierarchies, however, also serve to put people in their place and thereby shut a lot of doors on the way to a modern and agile way to work. Scout24 is going through a lot of positive changes in that respect: Dynamic and interdisciplinary teams are working together on numerous projects and this is very exciting.
Talks, Talks, Talks
Starting at 10am the Welcome Day kicks off with taking a look at the agenda. It is packed – thirteen presentations on all different areas and departments of the company. We start off with the organizational structure which is very useful since it provides me with an overview and thereby helps me in following each presentation and understanding how the company is operating as whole. After a couple of introductions from corporate IT, facility management and the sales team it is time for a pizza break where everyone has the chance of getting to know each other and have a little talk. Next item on the agenda are some insights into projects like “the consumer journey” – an actual walk through each step our consumers go through when selling and buying process a car. The installation visualizes the consumers’ needs throughout the whole process, including the steps before and after using our platform. We also get to hear about the works council and its members, data privacy and AutoScout24 latest acquisition, easyautosale.com. Often, you only know the job title of some of the persons you work with. The presentations provide a real insight into their day to day work.
Just Shoot Us an Email
Everybody is really open and eager to communicate with the attendees. After every talk the speakers independently suggest coming to talk to them concerning possible questions we might have. This invitation made me less shy to approach them.
Great Is Not Good Enough
Furthermore, there is a lot of self-reflection and no fear of self-criticism. It is really refreshing to hear the speakers talk openly about what they are not happy with and how they are planning to improve it. No one is perfect and being transparent about your flaws within the company sends a positive signal to newcomers like me. The focus lies on continuous development and improvement.
Getting to Know the Use of a Motto
There is a lot of talk about vision. As a technophile person I want to stop talking and start building. While I am listening to a presentation about the goals for the company I start thinking about specific features one could implement on the platform in order to contribute in achieving those goals. What I find truly remarkable is that across all departments, from facility management to User Experience, coworkers understand the direction the company is going. This mindset really influences their decision on how to prioritize and tackle problems.
